The Naming was a Carrionite spell in which powerful words ended with an object or person being named, which in turn caused the target injury or even death. The Tenth Doctor, recognising that Mother Doomfinger was a Carrionite, named her and thus transported her back where she came from. Martha Jones later tried the same trick on Lillith, only to learn that a Naming did not work when it was repeated. Lilith instead knocked out Martha by naming her and, finding that the Doctor had no name, failed to stop his heart by naming Rose Tyler. (TV: The Shakespeare Code)
