History

The Hillier Expedition

As part of Captain Hillier's expedition, Jane was tasked with helping to uncover the mysterious location known as the Hive. This expedition brought her to a planet that sat in close proximity a temporal rift. During this expedition, Jane fell while abseiling and fell through the rift and into the Void. Fellow archaeologist River Song attempted to rescue Jane, who at this point, unbeknownst to River, had become infected by a lone survivor of the Scourge. Having stared into the Void, River heard a familiar voice. River stole a spaceship and flew through the rift and into the Void, rescuing Jane. However, the rift had damaged her ship and split her timeline into two.

Becoming the Wife of River Song

In the past, one version of River Song had crash landed and discovered the Hive to be a meditation spa that used symbiosis with other species to relax their customers. This was perfect for a weak and dying Jane, who used the tanks provided by the facility to infect the other clients and create herself a new hive mind as the new Scourge host. This caused mass hysteria and fear amongst the patients, which Jane fed on, thus making her much stronger. Knowing River to be much more than a lesser species, she implanted memories of a fake life together over a long period of time, building up trust. With the other patients losing their minds, the robotic staff gave them the tools to end their lives and those lives around them, misunderstand their instruction to protect life. Jane then laid in wait for the other River Song to turn up.

Meanwhile, the clone sister of River, Brooke, had arrived knowing the Hive to be a place so luxurious that she could perform robberies and make herself rich. Brooke saw the devastation that ensued, almost getting killed by the robotic staff named Marshall. As a last ditched effort to stay alive, Brooke cried out to River. This cry had been previously heard by River through the Void whilst she had been trying to rescue Jane. This was when another version of River created by the splintered timeline crashed on the planet. This River was rescued by Jane, who was pretending to hold back information to confuse River. All the while, River was getting new memories as both River's timelines were converging. These memories showed different events where she was with Jane, including their wedding. Now trusting Jane, River set about rescuing Brooke.

Jane, however, explained that the outbreak had started when Brooke had arrived. This was a lie, but the fake trust that had arose from the implanted memories caused River to trust Jane. Jane was seemingly murdered when Brooke reassembled Marshall as attempt to prove to River that she wasn't the Source. River refused to listen and Brooke ran, fearing River would kill her for the death of her supposed wife. Whilst fleeing, Brooke discovered the past River in a containment chamber. This River's mind had been completely broken by Jane, after years of psychic manipulation. After a reunion of the Rivers, the truth came out when Jane returned and mutated into her true form. The two Rivers and Brooke killed Jane for good when they proved neither of them was scared of her any more. (AUDIO: The Wife of River Song)

Legacy

After returning through the Void, Jane had infected Brooke. Brooke passed this infection onto the money hungry Hillier, who had refused River's request to quarantine the planet. Brooke pushed him into the Void. River's timeline had once again converged and she had become whole again. She reflected on how poor Jane's life wasn't as insignificant as Hillier made out.
