Francis Michael Gough (23 November 1916-17 March 2011[1]) played the Celestial Toymaker in the Doctor Who television story The Celestial Toymaker, and also briefly dubbed over William Hartnell for the First Doctor's impression of the Toymaker. He later played Hedin in Arc of Infinity.

He would also have returned as the Toymaker for The Nightmare Fair had the original Season 23 not been cancelled.[2] It is unknown if Gough was actually approached about making the audio play, but he had been retired for almost a decade by the time it was produced, only appearing in two Tim Burton films as a personal favour.

Gough was also considered to play Dr Fendelman in Image of the Fendahl,[3] Professor Hayter in Time-Flight[4] and Lord Ravensworth in The Mark of the Rani.[5]

Career[[edit] | [edit source]]

A longtime character actor employed on both sides of the Atlantic, Gough is most widely known for playing Alfred Pennyworth from 1989 to 1997 in Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.

Personal life[[edit] | [edit source]]

From 1962 to 1979, Gough was married to Anneke Wills, who played companion Polly Wright.
