Rhys & Ianto's Excellent Barbecue was the forty-fourth story in the Torchwood - Monthly Range by Big Finish Productions. It was written by Tim Foley and featured Kai Owen as Rhys Williams and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones.

Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]

Rhys is planning a lads' night in. Barbie in the back yard, few tins, mates and bants. But the only person who turns up is Ianto – who hasn't been invited. Hell is other people, especially when they've brought board games.

Something goes wrong. The two of them could be trapped together for eternity at a barbecue where the sausages never cook, and worse, the brewskis remain forever out of reach.

Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Rhys Williams tells Badger that he sent out the "bat-signal", in reference to him inviting Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, in reference to Batman's call signal.
  • Rhys and his friends are struggling to come to terms with the suicide of their friend Daf.
  • Ianto Jones assumes that the "lads' barbecue" is a cover for toxic masculinity and homophobia. He later discovers that it is a brave attempt from Rhys to bring the greiving friends together to mourn the loss of their friend in their own way.
  • Rhys assumes that Ianto is on duty, hence his suit and tie, and that Gwen Cooper has uninvited his friends. Ianto claims that he wears suits simply because Torchwood is always on duty.
