A "nameless planet" in Galactic Sector 973 was home to the Ulk-Ra. Other native animals included the Lyr-bear. It had a mother-of-pearl sky and vast forests, as well as vividly blue inland seas saturated with copper-sulphate salts and rimmed by gemstone-encrusted beaches with ruby pebbles.

The planet's life originated from these inland seas, leading to a copper-based ecosystem. However, the Ulk-Ra evolved away from their arboreal ancestors, becoming proto-mammalian at birth but still capable of metamorphosing into copper-based creatures through consumption of the Issu-mul berry. Female Ulk-Ra consumed Issu-mul to swim through the otherwise-corrosive seas to reach the birthing reefs.

After allying with the War Chief, the War Lords travelled to the planet in SIDRATs and kidnapped a few Ulk-Ra to test if the species could participate in the War Games. Gallifreyan Time Technicians later returned these specimens to the planet, upsetting the ecosystem because Ossu of the Aelcluks still had War Lord implants. Fleeing along the time-vectors of the Time Technicians, the Second Doctor, Zoe Heriot, and Jamie McCrimmon came to the planet while on the run from the Time Lords and witnessed Ossu's death.
