Doctor Who Weekly began in 1979 under the editorship of Dez Skinn. Skinn, one of Marvel Comic's editors had noticed the popularity of Doctor Who related content in Starburst a Marvel UK magazine. In 1979 at the Worldcon Convention at Brighton he obtained an agreement with the British Broadcasting Corporation with then producer of Doctor Who Graham Williams acting on behalf of the BBC. Tom Baker (the Doctor at the time) was also at the convention was also signed up to promote the first issue.[1]

Doctor Who Weekly was first released on the 17th October 1979 published by Marvel Comics Ltd on a Thursday, with a cover price of 12 pence in the United Kingdom. It continued to be published in a weekly format, (which was still popular in the UK despite trends internationally towards a monthly format) until September 1980 where its format changed to a monthly format, and it was retitled as Doctor Who - A Marvel Monthly.
