Doctor Who - A Marvel Monthly, formerly Doctor Who Weekly, was given this title after the shift from a weekly to a monthly format. The magazine was published every month by Marvel Comics Ltd. Doctor Who - A Marvel Monthly was edited by Paul Neary, who had been editing Doctor Who Weekly since issue 23 (taking over from Dez Skinn). Neary was editor through to issue 48, January 1981. Alan McKenzie began as editor in February 1981 with issue 49.

With the magazine's change from a weekly to a monthly format, the price rose from 12 pence in the United Kingdom to 30 pence. In May 1981 the magazine rose in price to 35 pence, and in October 1981 to 40 pence in the United Kingdom.
