Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States, beginning in 1929. During his watch, the Great Depression set in, and millions of Americans became homeless. Many of these were forced to then take up temporary residence in shanty towns called "Hoovervilles" that were angrily named after the president many blamed for the economic downturn.
