Brewster was the butler at Cranleigh Hall in 1925.
Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]
Early life[[edit] | [edit source]]
Brewster had a humble background and was jealous of those with a higher social status than himself. (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"]) He was in the employment of the Cranleighs of Cranleigh Hall as a butler by 1925 (TV: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (TV story)"]) and begrudged the fact that George Cranleigh, who was less gracious than himself, was of higher standing than him. His wife worked as the housekeeper. (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"])
Cranleighs' ball[[edit] | [edit source]]
On 11 June 1925, Brewster supervised his staff at the marquee at Cranleigh Cricket Club. (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"]) Following the match, he returned to Cranleigh Hall where he served lemonade for the Fifth Doctor, orange juice for Adric and Nyssa and a screwdriver for Tegan Jovanka ahead of the Cranleighs' annual ball in aid of the Hospital for Sick Children.
Brewster stood at the buffet table during the ball, assisted by James and Henry, (TV: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (TV story)"]) and offered Adric some mousse de foies de volaille, (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"]) which he declined. After Henry informed Brewster of James's death, Brewster alerted Charles (TV: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (TV story)"]) and was told by his employer to move the body, but the Doctor pointed out that it should not be moved. He then fetched Sir Robert Muir. (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"])
Standing with a maid next to Constable Cummings, Brewster watched as George Cranleigh carried Nyssa, believing that she was Ann Talbot, up to the roof of Cranleigh Hall, from which he later fell. (TV: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (TV story)"])
Personality[[edit] | [edit source]]
Brewster was a regal and gracious man, moreso than the King and his employer respectively, who was jealous of Charles Cranleigh's social status. (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"]) According to Charles, he was able to make any alcoholic beverage "quite superbly". (TV: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (TV story)"])
Appearance[[edit] | [edit source]]
Brewster was a regal-looking (PROSE: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (novelisation)"]) white man with white hair and a moustache. He wore a plain ring on the ring finger of his left hand. (TV: Black Orchid [+]Loading...["Black Orchid (TV story)"])
