Loose Ends 5: Ian Memoriam was the fifth instalment of Loose Ends published in Doctor Who Magazine #606 on 18 July 2024[1] by Panini Magazines. It was written by Jonathan Morris and illustrated by Roger Langridge.
Written as a tribute to William Russell following his death, the story focused on his characters Ian Chesterton and Harry, the latter interestingly from the 2013 docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time.
The story also made a number of references to Ian's adventures in non-televised media.

Scenes Unseen[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Power of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Power of the Doctor (TV story)"]
At a companion support group meeting, many of the Doctor's companions fondly reminisce about the stories the late Ian Chesterton told them. Jo finds the notion of giant ants to be worse than the maggots she faced, Tegan has a twang of envy at how Ian met Marco Polo, Robespierre and Richard the Lionheart and Dan adds Emperor Nero — a story which had him in "stitches."
Ryan is more sceptical of his tales involving the rocket men, meeting prehistoric cavemen a second time, the Salem witch trials, the Venusians and the Zomites, although Mel assured them they happened at "some time or another" and Kate felt that there were likely many other stories Ian never told them.
Yaz fondly remembers how Ian spoke of Barbara and Ace is in disbelief of his passing, although Graham and Tegan points out that Ian isn't truly dead as he will still be having adventures throughout time, from the 22nd century to the 25th century to... London 1965!
- "So I think..." said Graham, "I think, in a way, if you travel with the Doctor, you kind of live forever."
Where Are They Now?[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Harry from An Adventure in Space and Time [+]Loading...["An Adventure in Space and Time (TV story)"]
Harry, a BBC commissionaire, always makes sure anyone who wants access to the BBC Television Centre — whether they are Morecambe and Wise, The Beatles, Bobby Charlton, prime ministers or even David Attenborough — is on his list.
Once, however, he did make an exception, just before his retirement. The television centre was often used as a backdrop for photography, and a man in a hat and scarf turned up with a bunch of robots from the children's television series Doctor Who — he let them in without checking their identity, as he didn't want to be exterminated...
The Unexplained[[edit] | [edit source]]
After returning to London 1965, Ian and Barbara didn't need to explain their two-year absence to their colleagues at Coal Hill School, as after they had left, the Daleks had begun controlling the faculty with brain implants. A month later, the school was closed and they were out of a job.

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The title of this story is a pun on the Latin phrase "In Memoriam".
Continuity[[edit] | [edit source]]
- This story references many of Ian Chesterton's adventures, both on television and in spin-offs:
- Jo remembers the story of the Zarbi from TV: The Web Planet [+]Loading...["The Web Planet (TV story)"]
- Tegan was remembers the stories of Marco Polo, Robespierre and Richard the Lionheart from TV: Marco Polo [+]Loading...["Marco Polo (TV story)"], The Reign of Terror [+]Loading...["The Reign of Terror (TV story)"] and The Crusade [+]Loading...["The Crusade (TV story)"] respectively
- Dan remembers the story of Emperor Nero from TV: The Romans [+]Loading...["The Romans (TV story)"]
- Ryan remembers the stories of the Rocket Men, Ian's second encounter with the Tribe of Gum, the Salem witch trials, the Venusians and the Zomites, from AUDIO: The Rocket Men [+]Loading...["The Rocket Men (audio story)"], COMIC: Hunters of the Burning Stone [+]Loading...["Hunters of the Burning Stone (comic story)"], PROSE: The Witch Hunters [+]Loading...["The Witch Hunters (novel)"], Venusian Lullaby [+]Loading...["Venusian Lullaby (novel)"], and COMIC: The Daleks Destroy the Zomites [+]Loading...["The Daleks Destroy the Zomites (comic story)"], respectively. Ryan's skepticism is an allusion to these being non-televised, however Mel's response affirms that they are no less real than those on television;
- The references to the 22nd and 25th centuries allude to TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"] and The Rescue [+]Loading...["The Rescue (TV story)"]. The reference to "London 1965" is to TV: The Chase [+]Loading...["The Chase (TV story)"], specifically the internet meme that arose over the "London, 1965" line of dialogue after a 2018 Twitch stream.[2] This meme was also referenced in the title of AUDIO: London, 1965 [+]Loading...["London, 1965 (audio story)"] and the "London, 1965!' article in Doctor Who Magazine #527.
- The portion with Harry is a successor to DOC: An Adventure in Space and Time. In spirit with the dramatised account of the creation and early years of Doctor Who, the section references the real photoshoot Tom Baker did with Dalek props at the BBC Television Centre.
- The section that sought to explain how Ian and Barbara explained their absence to Coal Hill School after they stopped travelling with the Doctor (as seen in TV: The Chase [+]Loading...["The Chase (TV story)"]), merely explains that the events of TV: Remembrance of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Remembrance of the Daleks (TV story)"] made it so there was nobody at the school for them to explain themselves to.
