M82 was a galaxy that supported life of some kind. The Tenth Doctor pointed out that Eve would have to wipe out all life in the M82 galaxy before she would be close to wiping out all life in the universe. (PROSE: The Last Dodo)

M82 is also known as the Cigar Galaxy and is situated about 12 million light years from Earth.
The image of the Tri-Galactic in Planet of the Ood uses a picture of M82 to represent one of the three galaxies.
