Stratford Johns (22 September 1925-29 January 2002[1]) played Monarch in the Doctor Who television story Four to Doomsday.

He had earlier been considered for the role of Rorvik in Warriors' Gate (TCH 33) and subsequently considered for the role of Ratcliffe in Remembrance of the Daleks. (TCH 44)

His best known role was undoubtedly that of Chief Inspector Charles Barlow, who first appeared in Z-Cars. The character of Barlow, always played by Johns, later appeared in various spin-offs from that series: Softly, Softly, Softly, Softly: Taskforce, Barlow at Large, Jack the Ripper and Second Verdict. He also made guest appearances in I, Claudius and Blake's 7, as well as having small parts in The Ladykillers and A Night to Remember.
