Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

Covioll, a Gendar child, prays to three statues of Auteur - specifically the thirteenth incarnation known as "Papa Noël" (or Santa). He asks for several things including a bugle, so that his father Jeliv can teach him how to play, and for his mother Jecriss not to have so much work on Christmas Eve. His final request is for the Auteur to return to Gendar - as the final wish is granted a robed skeletal body is dumped somewhere far in the desert.

Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • Covioll writes his letter to Santa in French, which he calls the "Holy Tongue", as his mother Jecriss told him that Santa doesn't like receiving mail in Gendar.
  • Covioll's extended family included Ada, Ostyia, Belviassa, Tarevol and Ra'ka'kak'a'ta.
  • Auteur is in his seventeenth incarnation, which he dubs the 'Monochrome Auteur'. His sixteenth, fifteenth, fourteenth, thirteenth and twelfth are dubbed the 'Retconned Auteur', the 'Remembered Auteur', 'Godfather Auteur', 'Father Noël' and the 'Goddess of Gendar' respectively. In the seventeenth Auteur's mind, several other possible thirteenth incarnations existed, namely the Astral Mapper, the Astrologer, Bateleur, Hastur, a living fiction entity and the Shaman among others.
