The Brenda and Effie series was a series of gothic mystery novels written by Paul Magrs. The series followed Brenda, the "Bride of Frankenstein", who set up a B&B in Whitby, and solved mysteries with her best friend Effie. (PROSE: The Story of Fester Cat) The series was published by Headline Review, and the series was actually based off the real Brenda and Effie - the former even endorsed the series. (PROSE: Brenda's B&B)

Stories in the series included Never the Bride, Something Borrowed, Conjugal Rites, and Hell's Belles. (PROSE: Brenda's B&B)

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

The series was first released prior to 2007. By this year, Paul knew the books had a decicated following of fans, but he knew the books were generally considered "quirky" and "trashy". Due to the low sales in books, Paul also knew that his publisher would soon be dropping him and his series.

In spite of this, Paul put effort into the series, and every Halloween, he, his partner Jeremy, and his friend Panda travelled up to Whitby to meet fans, and in a bookshop, Paul gave readings of his stories, before a signing. (PROSE: The Story of Fester Cat)

On 12 December, 2009, Brenda sent out a letter to the readers of this series, inviting them to stay at her her B&B. (PROSE: Brenda's B&B)

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

In the real world, the issues with the publisher of The Brenda and Effie Mysteries took place in 2012, not 2007. This is an oddity of the dating of The Story of Fester Cat, where the beginning and the ending of the novel have defined dates, but the rest is more vague, which is a result of Fester being an unreliable narrator.
