Whitby was a Gothic and bijou seaside town in North Yorkshire, bordering onto the North Sea. (PROSE: Brenda's B&B) It was located near Darlington. (PROSE: The Dreadful Flap)

In Whitby, there were a variety of businesses and locations: the Christmas Hotel, the Deadly Boutique, Hotel Miramar, The Walrus and the Carpenter, Church Street, the West Cliff, the 199 steps and the abbey, and Brenda's B&B. (PROSE: Brenda's B&B)

History

In the 19th century, Dracula washed up on Whitby's shores in the form of a large hound. (PROSE: The Dreadful Flap, Brenda's B&B) The Tenth Doctor claimed to have "bumped into [Dracula] on the beach". In 1917, Reginald Tyler met Enid Tyler while he was recovering in a Whitby hospital. During his time in Whitby, he began writing a book which would eventually become The True History of Planets. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)

Behind the scenes

The nameless town near Maiden's Point where The Curse of Fenric is set is identified by the Seventh Doctor as the place where Dracula is said to have come ashore. However, it is never called Whitby by name, and the town is said to be in Northumberland rather than North Yorkshire, casting doubt on its identification as Whitby.
