The Doctor complains that he just wants some pie, but surrender and gets going.
(the above paragraph documents a later addition to the storyline which wasn’t present in the originally released story)
Vastra tells Jenny that they have another murder so Jenny asks her if she needs her tools. The Doctor interrupts saying he doesn't think she needs them, and wonders if they're solving a case. Vastra tells him and Leela that this case would've been solved long ago "if", to which the Doctor wonders what a could be hindering a talent like her, but Jenna replies that she doesn't want to talk about it. The Doctor asks if they need a helping hand but is interrupted by Sherlock Holmes who has arrived along with John Watson.
Holmes asks them to remove themselves from the crime scene as he deems it too gruesome for a pair of ladies, but Vastra tells him she will go where she pleases as it's their case. Holmes says he detects a hint of sarcasm and deem it unbecoming, to which Vastra sarcastically says he must be a good detective, to which the Doctor exclaims he has no idea what’s happening but he is loving it. Watson lets Holmes know of his distrust in them, suspecting they might have done something to the scene, but Jenny retorts that they must think her and Vastra incompetent since they’re already investigating. Holmes exclaims he just wants the best detective on the case, at which point Leela asks the Doctor why Vastra doesn’t just stab him.
Vastra asks the Doctor for a moment, which the Doctor says he can spare, considering he lives in eternity. She assumes he knows this is wrong and that they're there because of the two "fakes", to which he claims he was originally there for meat pies but finds this interesting. Vastra suggests they could be aliens or robots but he claims he can tell they are humans. Vastra then suggest they could be ill and therefore imagining themselves to be the characters. The Doctor says he won’t rule it out but adds he feels a ripple of cosmic disrepair in the air.
Leela asks for clarity regarding the situation and the Doctor explains that those two men are characters in stories from the planet. Leela says she still don’t understand as all stories are of people. The Doctor clarifies that some stories are of people who don’t exist, which Leela doesn’t understand the concept of. The Doctor says he could explain the concept then gets lost in his own thoughts thinking of the word "fiction". Jenny asks the Doctor if he will help, but Leela says he is lost in thought like a child during first hunting day. Jenny, realizing it’ll take some time, then asks Vastra if she wants to track them.
Vastra asks the Doctor what he's thinking about, but he says he was just entranced by the city, he then says he will tell her but first he wants to ask something himself - if there's any word on science experiments gone wrong. She says no and asks why, but he brushes it off and wonders where they're going, to which Vastra responds that they’re following Holmes and Watson to their lair. The Doctor asks if they’ve tried 221B Baker Street.
They track them to a building, with the duo having helped a passerby and solved a crime while this happened - an impressive deduction on their part, Jenny says, even if they were fake. The Doctor says he wouldn't call them fake but fictional. Vastra asks for clarification on the thought process - the Doctor responds with a longwinded talk about him having a tingling sensation. Leela asks if he senses danger to which he replies with not danger, but a bad accident. Vastra realizes that’s why he asked about scientific developments, which the Doctor confirms and says they have to find the detectives before it’s too late.
Leela can smell dead bodies near their area. The Doctor applaud her, but asks if she knows the other present scents, to which Leela says she can’t and that it irks her. Vastra says they were trying to open a rift according to the paperwork - it turns out they were successful. The rift makes a noise and Holmes and Watson exit, ready for new adventures, but sees their welcome party. The Doctor says it's a gateway to the Land of Fiction. Holmes congratules the Doctor on his deduction.
The Doctor tells them to get back in but they don't want to as they're free in their reality, where they are challenged with real crimes instead of pre-written ones. The Doctor tells them they're breaking the natural order of things. Jenny butts in by saying they're annoying her and her wife also. Holmes wonders who will solve the crimes in London if they're not there, which Vastra claims is extremely annoying. The Doctor tells them if they stay no one will know who they are soon - Holmes says no one knows them, not for real. The Doctor ensures them that they do as they have inspired thousands across time and space.
Holmes ponders on how they can inspire anyone as a puppet of a writer with preordained crimes, but the Doctor explains that artists, writers and detectives are inspired by him as their adventures are a part of a collective imagination of mankind and that everyone will forget them if they leave the Land of Fiction, asking them if they want to be real in the moment or immortalised forever. Holmes says he now understands and that the duo decide to return back. The Doctor bids them farewell.
Vastra and Jenny thank the Doctor for his help as they would've resorted to more violent measures themselves. The Doctor says that if those measures involved swords or poisoning, he would be disappointed. Leela expresses that she would not and that she was surprised Vastra did not just cut him down when he first disrespected her. Vastra exclaims that it is unlucky that this time consider killing one's enemies as uncivilized. Leela asks if they don’t do it even in honourable single combat, to which Vastra confirms they do, but more for show than honour. Leela thinks that strange, but the Doctor interrupts, suggesting they talk less about murder and combat, and more about meat pies. Vastra treats them.
Holmes tells Watson to follow him back into the gateway, with time being essential. Watson tells Holmes to wait for him. Holmes then says that they have crimes to uncover, mysteries to solve and people to inspire, before jumping back through.
