The Meiji period began circa 1850 AD in Japan and represented an end to the isolationism of the Tokugawa shogunate. This combination of the hierarchies of Shogunism not yet fading from the culture, as well as the society being willing to explain away bizarre phenomena as simply being the work of western outsiders, made it the perfect time period for the House Military training facility, The Gauntlet to be placed in.
