Al Norton was an out of work actor who took work as a department store Santa Claus.
He didn't like Christmas and he often drank alcohol, to the point he started started hearing voices. He lost his job because people thought he was drunk at work, rather than being disturbed.
He saw a ghostly apparition of Charlotte Pollard and Audacity Montague and then saw them in real life becoming frightened. He later told them and the Eighth Doctor about his situation.
