Alef was Jom's daughter. Her mind was placed into Melanie Bush. She didn't like this but went along with it for a while. She learnt that Jom had sabotaged the link but couldn't properly repair it. She told the Sixth Doctor the truth, and asked for him to get Mel's memory correctly. She was downloaded into the final body to live out their lives together.
