Aristophanes (The Book of Shadows)

Aristophanes was a scholar who lived 3 centuries apart from Eratosthenes. Despite this, the First Doctor met the two of them in the Library of Alexandria in 322 BC in an alternate timeline, courtesy of the time-travel portals installed by Rhakotis. (PROSE: The Book of Shadows)

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

It is not entirely clear which Aristophanes this is from the text alone. While Eratosthenes is easily identified based on the mention of his real life achievements, Aristophanes is only identified as living 3 centuries apart from Eratosthenes and as a reader of the books of the library. Aristophanes of Byzantium lived in the 3rd century BC and also was a real life frequenter of the Library of Alexandria. In the real world, Eratosthenes also lived in the same century as this Aristophanes, however the short story claims that he lived in the 1st century AD, which explains the 3 century gap, indicating that this is intended to be Aristophanes of Byzantium. The other famous Aristophanes was a playwright living from 446-386 BC.
