According to one account, Barbara Wright met Ian Chesterton at a car crash site on Barnes Common shortly before they both met the First Doctor and were transported to Skaro. By another account, they were already colleagues at Coal Hill School, and met the First Doctor in Totter's Yard. (TV: "An Unearthly Child" [+]Part of An Unearthly Child, Loading...{"namedep":"An Unearthly Child (1)","1":"An Unearthly Child (TV story)"}, et al.) The War Doctor only remembered this series of events, but the Barber-Surgeon met another version of the Doctor who told him about Barnes Common. The War Doctor insisted that this alternative encounter "never happened". The Barber-Surgeon replied that "everything's happened somewhere". In one parallel universe, the First Doctor foresaw both possibilities, using his Possibility Generator, before departing Gallifrey. When attempting to use the fast return switch to return Barbara and Ian to Earth in 1963, the First Doctor noted that they wouldn't necessarily end up in Totter's Lane, and might instead end up somewhere else, like Barnes Common.
