Within ten years of the Spiderweiss bureau's opening in Vienna, the Beauftragter was someone who Johanna Adell thought had many vices. Upon meeting a young new recruit named Vaella, Adell watched the Beauftragter "run his eyes over [her] twice". Vaella hoped that by reporting directly to the Beauftragter, she would be able to advance quickly through the ranks of the organisation.
In contrast, Adell was determined to earn by risk and success. After encountering the Doctor, she was reluctant to accept further promotions, lest she be trapped behind a desk and miss a chance to meet him again.
