In general, categories should not be hidden. However, in the case of categories which are created solely for use with advanced coding functions like DPL or SMW, then it can be useful to hide them.

The following is a list of all pages that need to be linked in other pages. They are, in wiki-speak, orphaned pages. They have been placed into this category by the use of {{orphan}}.
When you create a new page, it's very important that you remember to link to it on other pages. Otherwise, the average reader of the wiki can only discover your page through the use of the search bar.
Since a wiki is a relational database, in which one item is connected to another, orphaned pages are serious problems. On the much larger Wikipedia, some amount of orphanage is expected. But orphanage generally should not happen on a relatively smaller wiki like this one.
Consequently, this category is bot-enforced — something upon which Wikipedians frown.
