Cheating the Reaper was the first story in the Bernice Summerfield anthology Old Friends. It was written by Jonathan Clements.

Bernice Summerfield is accompanied to Balgoris by her ex-husband Jason Kane to attend the funeral of her old friend the Demi-lemur Ivo Fitzlndri, but suspicions are soon raised when she repeatedly bumps into familiar faces from her past in the Spacefleet Academy.
