Dalek Supreme (Out of Time)
During the Second Dalek War, a Dalek Supreme, also addressed as Supreme Commander and mostly referred to as the Supreme, directed grey Dalek drones in the invasion of the Cathedral of Contemplation. (AUDIO: Out of Time)
History[[edit] | [edit source]]
During the war, the Supreme's forces exterminated Captain Zenna's forces, making a Dalek duplicate of the man, sending him ahead to the Cathedral of Contemplation so that the Daleks could invade it via a time corridor whereupon they would form a time corridor directly into Earth High Command.
When the Daleks invaded, they quickly seized the control room, exterminating the Abbess, but were hampered by the computer systems, unable to lock the Cathedral onto Earth. When the Fourth Doctor was captured, he mocked the Daleks that their killing of the Abbess was the cause for their lack of progress. When the Tenth Doctor was later discovered and brought before the Daleks, the Supreme ordered the two plugged in as substitutes for the Abbess and to focus on Earth. Though a time corridor was established to Earth's spatial coordinates, the Tenth Doctor had sent the Dalek force to the year 5.5/Apple/26, when the Sun destroyed the Earth and the Daleks with it. The chaos of this proved enough of a distraction for the Supreme to lower its guard and allow Jora to shoot it.
As a result of its extra shielding systems, the Supreme survived the attack and began attacking directly only for the Doctors to trap it within the Cathedral as the structure collapsed in on itself. (AUDIO: Out of Time)
Its successor continued to explore time travel as an avenue through which to win the war. (PROSE: Prisoner of the Daleks)
Characteristics[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Supreme Dalek was a variant of the Dalek Supreme model, with a red casing, golden sense globes, and extra slat plating connecting the grating section to the weapons platform. He also had a deeper, louder voice than the other Daleks that resembled that of the Dalek Emperor. As well as extra armour, the Supreme One had a third luminosity discharger, which — as with his other lights — was mounted on a small plate atop his dome. (AUDIO: Out of Time) Leading new bronze Daleks which shared its refined shape, this Supreme Dalek model would appear during the Last Great Time War and beyond. (COMIC: Ambush, TV: The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar)
Personality[[edit] | [edit source]]
Like most Supremes who had preceded and succeeded it, this Supreme Dalek had demanding personality, expecting total obedience from its troops and being intolerant of failure. Being a higher ranking Dalek, it had a more developed personality than its soldiers, being able to recognise falsehoods and think beyond normal Dalek parameters.
Its most notable quality, the one that ultimately spelt its downfall, was its sense of pride. Overconfident that Dalek superiority would always triumph, the Supreme hastily gunned down the Abbess, undermining the Dalek stratagem. It also believed itself capable of controlling the Doctor, being unprepared for the Time Lord outthinking it. The Tenth Doctor, in an ultimately successful attempt to goad it, noted that this particular Supreme was more cowardly than others of its rank, opting to command from a distance rather than fighting alongside the drones. (AUDIO: Out of Time)
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Tenth Doctor asks this Dalek if it prefers to be called "Supreme Dalek" or "Dalek Supreme". Throughout the audio, it is usually just referred to as "the Supreme", though it is called "Dalek Supreme" and "Supreme Commander" on two occasions each.
