The Meathunter drones are under orders to kill the Doctor!
Summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
Counting on the fact that the Meathunter drones will not risk firing at the ship's glass shell, the Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to deactivate them. The Doctor guesses that because the drones, who don't need air, didn't fire, they must be protecting someone or something else which needs air.
As he searches the ship, an automated voice announces a course change and the beginning of Operation Nightfall. This will take the ship into the shadow of a nearby moon. At nightfall the Palomians become savage, predatory creatures who hunger for fresh meat. The Doctor learns from the ship's navigational equipment that Palomi's orbit took it deep into the Tyranean nebula. Last night was actually forty-two years, giving the Palomians time to adapt and change. The shadow of the moon brought out their savage side and the construction of the warship itself, but the exposure to sunlight turned them into the peaceful creatures the Doctor first met on boarding.
Using his sonic screwdriver again, the Doctor changes the ship's course, taking it back to the sunlight. The peaceful Palomians re-emerge with no memory of "last night".

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Supporting the series of collectible Doctor Who trading cards, the magazine carried a regular four page comic strip series of the Tenth Doctor's adventures.
- The limitation of only four pages meant that stories often lacked depth compared to other regular comic strips running at the same time.
- The artwork and colours were bold and bright, reflecting the tone of the magazine and, as did Doctor Who Adventures, reflected the appeal to readers younger than those catered to by Doctor Who Magazine.
- The Battles in Time comic strip sought to reinforce the association of its Doctor with the one seen on screen with "props" from the TV series: his blue/brown suit, sonic screwdriver, psychic paper and his intelligent glasses.
