An MD was a type of qualification. Doctor Tarak Ital received an MD after studying medicine at Aga Khan University. He went on to specialise in space medicine at Harvard University. (TV: The Waters of Mars [+]Loading...["The Waters of Mars (TV story)"])
There were occasions where the Doctor implied they had an MD, or similar qualification. When asked by Polly Wright if his name implied he was a medical doctor, the Second Doctor claimed he graduated in Medicine in 1888 in Glasgow, (TV: The Moonbase [+]Loading...["The Moonbase (TV story)"]) though Clara Oswald would later explain that he graduated in the wrong century. (TV: Death in Heaven [+]Loading...["Death in Heaven (TV story)"]) When asked if he was a medical doctor and not just someone with a doctorate in cheesemaking, the Eleventh Doctor replied that he was both.
