Dr. Who's Time Tales (DWM 36 comic story)
The seventh story in the Dr. Who's Time Tales series was printed in Doctor Who Weekly #36.
It followed the format of the series: short tales depicting strange events in the Doctor Who universe, narrated by the Fourth Doctor himself, similar to DWM backup comic stories, created by adding the Fourth Doctor framing device to a preexisting Marvel comic story, in this case Always Leave 'Em Laughing!, first published in 1969 in Chamber of Darkness #1. The Fourth Doctor replaced the "horror host" of the original story, Digger. Digger's lines throughout the stories were reattributed to the Doctor, and original art of the Doctor was created beyond the opening splash panel.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Fourth Doctor, standing in a graveyard, tells the time tale of Boswell Boliver, a scientist whose greatest fear was to be laughed at. Boliver builds a time machine and sends himself back in time with a lighter, a camera and a radio, intent on being admired and obeyed by the "primitives" of the past even if his genius is not recognised in the present. Landing in the middle of a medieval joust, he is thrown into a dungeon for three days for disturbing the King's entertainment. When the King and Queen finally agree to see him, each of his demonstrations goes wrong, leading the royals to laugh at him yet again. He is about to be executed for wasting their majesties' time, but the queen suggests that his life be spared so that he may stay on as court jester, an offer which Boliver has no choice but to take despite it meaning he will spend his life being laughed at and relishing it.
