Having performed at the Tower Theatre, Ellis the Illusionist was a feature at Hoolak's Pier for a while before his act was axed because it was too dull. Ellis, not wanting to scare the children, kept his act too tame and as a result became penniless and desperate
He attempted to hold the Pier to ransom for the sum of one million credits by making the Pier appear to break up and by disguising himself as a giant tentacled creature. The Eleventh Doctor, who at the time had taken Amy Pond and Rory Williams along to the Pier for a fun trip, recognised Ellis's voice and shamed him into coming clean. The stunt, however, was impressive enough to secure his re-appointment as one of the star acts of the Pier. (COMIC: Pier Head From Space)
