Emancipation was a legal act which resulted in the freeing of a slave. As attested by General Morris Heggie in a letter dated 19 March 1865, Will Johnson took an "active part in the emancipation of Private [Moses] Smith". Because of this, Heggie granted permission for Johnson to place Smith under his command in the US Army. (PROSE: Blood and Hope)

Liz Shaw once asked the Brigadier if he had ever heard of female emancipation. (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians)
