The Federal Bureau of Investigation, (PROSE: Endgame) colloquially referred to as the FBI or the Bureau, (PROSE: First Frontier, TV: The Impossible Astronaut) was an American governmental department that conducted criminal investigations.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was an intelligence service formed in the early part of the 20th century that primarily dealt with crime. Until World War II and the formation of the Office of Strategic Services, the FBI was the US' only intelligence service. (PROSE: Endgame)

J. Edgar Hoover served as the Director of the FBI. He was director in 1945 when the FBI intercepted a letter claiming that Adolf Hitler had escaped Berlin and was living 500 miles from Buenos Aires. (PROSE: The Shadow in the Glass)
