Forum:Character Image Galleries
This continues a discussion started at Talk:Fourth Doctor...
I was looking at a few other wikia's last night and I thought the way that the Marvel Database handles galleries (Spider-Man_(Peter_Parker)/Gallery) is interesting. That would make a gallery for the Fourth Doctor something along the lines of Fourth_Doctor/Gallery... or maybe we could look at something similar to talk:Fourth Doctor and go with gallery:Fourth Doctor. --Raukodraug 18:03, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- this Wiki already has a format for galleries for characters. so either we should keep the old format or change the old galleries to conform with the new format, for consistency's sake.
- example of the current format:
- Gallery of Cybermen--Stardizzy2 19:59, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- I had come across that Cybermen gallery once before, but it had totally slipped my mind. The thing is though, that article stands completely alone. Prior to the link in this forum thread, nothing linked to Gallery of Cybermen. Since there are only a few galleries right now, it might be interesting to look at creating a more consistent gallery template that can be integrated directly into a character/species page. --Raukodraug 03:39, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- Fourth Doctor/Gallery would perhaps be better the other option, at least then it would tie directly to the Fourth Doctor page (or whichever page it is used on).
- I definitely think if we're going to implement it it should be an option rather than a rule. As our list of available sources for images to cover things can be limited in some instances, in reality we've got screenshots, comics and the covers of the New/Missing Adventures and the Bernice Summerfield novels/novells/audios. The Black Sheep covers (they're the ones for the EDA/PDA) are less than inspiring (and don't really give anything), some of Big Finish's Doctor Who releases are okay for some images, but mostly it's Adrian Salmon's Benny covers that give more with regards to images. --Tangerineduel 13:58, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- the MA and PDA covers featuring the previous Doctors just use heavy visual referencing of screenshots and publicity photos from the television series anyway. so essentially that leaves only comics and television. (unless you want to go the route of "the cover of everything that featured Doctor X, ever. --Stardizzy2 19:13, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Whoa! A bit freaky this. Ive literally just finished looking through the images around the wiki again and just came to the forum to ask...
Not should we, but could we expand the images bit by grouping them together a bit better. In all the bits I've done I've been keen to include as many image gallery pages as possible. We remember visuals, they should never be underestimated as a power to inspire and keep interest, jog memories and take you to other places...we've all done it at sometime..those hours on the computer! hey ho! Anyway.
It strikes me there are lots of good images not linked to pages which is a shame.
The problem it seems is;
- whether to include galleries as a heading in the main article (individual companion and characters for example) or,
- I've had a look at what should be one of the longer character pages James McCrimmon, and don't think it would hurt the page at the bottom to include a Gallery subsection in the article.
- to create seperate gallery pages which may be more appropriate for longer entries like the television adventures for example, or
- to use a mix of them both.
Thinking about how stand alone gallery pages may be headed I would suggest something like SUBJECT: Gallery or SUBJECT:(Gallery). The results in a search would be more appropriate than having 'Gallery' first.
I'm more than comfortable with the current layout I think its neat tidy and well spaced out.

- for grouping, I would do: general Season X publicity photos, then Season X stories in chronological order and also group the comics images into chronological order. as a slight variant of what I said above, I would include images of the Doctor from the book covers as long as they showed the Doctor dressed in variants of the normal dress. also, Sylvester McCoy and David Tennant have done so in-character covers fo Doctor Who Magazine (especially the former), so I'd put those in there too. --Stardizzy2 00:08, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Archivist's note[[edit source]]
The discussion here seems to drift without conclusion, so it should be pointed out that this discussion hasn't led to any changes to the wiki. Nothing about this thread describes the current reality on this wiki. Most characters do not in fact have galleries, and there has been no effort to categorize publicity photos by season. In fact, later policy has explicitly ruled out the use of publicity photos in most circumstances. Publicity photos now can only be used on the page of an actor to illustrate the character they played. Even there, a simple shot of them completely out of character is preferred.
