Forum:Quote of the Week origins
 
Now, on Doctor Who interesting or funny things are said. I've seen other wikis, and I think we should have a Quote of the Week to go on the Main Page. We put up a list of quotes, and vote for them. Take Wookieeepdia for example:[1] Darth Oompa 17:53, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm up for it in theory, though I would make the proviso that the quotes don't always come from televised Doctor Who, there are whole areas to get quotes from the novels (PROSE: PROSE, PROSE, PROSE, PROSE etc), all the Big Finish audio dramas (plus all the spin offs), and everything else. Because there is plenty of funny, insightful and interesting stuff which hasn't been said on televised Doctor Who. --Tangerineduel 07:54, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

- Well, sure, it's a neat idea. But we've got to come up with a paradigm for it before we begin the rather considerable job of coding it. As I understand the code underlying the Wookieepedia system, a new subpage has got to be created for every day of the year. Though the basic code for getting a quote to display is a snap, ya gotta make at least 365 pages to support it.
- Then you have to determine how those 365 pages get populated. On Wookieepedia, it's a rather complicated nomination process, followed by manual population of the fields. This would mean that someone has to be on hand to keep the thing running On MemoryAlpha, the similar "Picture of the Day" code isn't a nominated process, but the code to make it automated is fairly complex. I'm not sure I quite grasp how it all works, cause it seems to call on a lot of templates we don't have in place. But I'm willing to give it a try. Which way do we want to go? Simple code, but non-automated population of the pages, or complex code, but totally hands-free and easy after it's all set up? CzechOut ☎ | ✍ 07:50, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
- really its down to whether anyone can do the code and if they have the time to spare which will ultimatley determin which way we go. But I know that it would drive me made having to manually change it every day of the year Dark Lord Xander 07:57, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, but see, what you get from manually having to change the pages is a measure of control over the process. If it's totally automated, anyone can put anything they want into the fields, which could lead to some undesirable results. You'll still need an admin keeping an eye on the process. Put another way, it's not that Wookieepedia have taken the "easy" approach to coding; they've made a deliberate choice to put an admin "wall" up at the start of the process, rather than having one making sure that no one's abusing the automated process. And that's what we need to do before anyone wastes their time coding "the wrong way". We need to make a choice. CzechOut ☎ | ✍ 08:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Quote of the Week - 2009[[edit source]]
So far the implementation of the Quote of the Week has been haphazard and random. I've tried to address this, but some users not seen my first attempt. So again, a second go at this.

I have (for now) changed the quote on the main page for this week, pending a hopefully (short) nomination and vote for this week and next week and so on. - It's relatively clearly defined on the Tardis:Quote of the Week policy page. The week is defined as Monday to Sunday, it's changed anytime on Monday, when Monday begins is defined when Monday rolls around according to GMT. --Tangerineduel 15:53, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Just out of interest, has 'Exterminate!' ever been a quote of week? (Or 'Delete!' or 'Sontar-Ha!' for that matter...) Taccer 07 23:01, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- You're free to put them up for nomination and vote. Though I would shy away from the more known and cliched quotes. Also those single word (or hyphenated statement) are a little harder to point to a single reference and who said it. Quotes of length, but not too long are good, the one that's currently on the main page, and those up for nomination for 9th - 15th Feb are all great also. --Tangerineduel 13:30, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
