Global Conspiracy? was a tongue-in-cheek mini-episode, where an investigative reporter interviewed people about the events of the television story The Green Death.

Global Conspiracy? was a parody of the documentary genre (although not of Doctor Who itself), and as it introduced the concept of BOSS and Stevens having survived the events of The Green Death — continuity of which has been concurred by other stories — it is evident that this mini-episode is a meaningful Doctor Who story proper.

Synopsis

Investigative reporter Terry Scanlon interviews people about the aftermath of the pollution in Llanfairfach decades previously.

Worldbuilding

• Llanfairfach is twinned with Mortverte, France, and Grunertod, Germany—both of which translate to "Green Death" in English.
• A report by Sarah Jane Smith entitled "Green Man Horror" was published by the Newport Echo after Gordon Williams found toxic waste in his drain. Another article reads, "Packer Dies! Horribly!!"
• A top secret file from UNIT, dated 17 June 1973, about the "Llanfairfach Incident", which was a level three incident, has been made public. The document mentions Clifford Jones, Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant and UNIT's mysterious scientific advisor, Dr John Smith.
• Terry brings up the marriage of Cliff Jones and Jo Grant.
• Cliff Jones is now chairman of Nuthutch Foods, which he says he developed in the 1980s, and which produces vegetarian meat-free products under the label Nuthutch.
  • These products include a chicken style roast and fungus cannelloni, whose ingredients include tomatoes, herbs, mushrooms, mould, "that strange lump of something on the stairs in that run-down house [...]" and egg pasta.
• Eventually Cliff and Jo drifted apart due to a "blue crystal".
• Jocelyn Stevens is now Director-General of the BBC.

Story notes

• Towards the end of the events, Mark Elgin had appendix problems, and so was at the Newport General Hospital at the incident's culmination. In real life, Tony Adams was also in fact ill with the same ailment and in hospital before the filming of episode five, so Elgin had to be replaced with a new character called James, played by Roy Skelton.

Continuity

• Terry references "lizard men in string vests attacking sea forts" as "just another season story". (TV: The Sea Devils)
• Cliff says that he and Jo drifted apart due to a "blue crystal". (TV: The Green Death, Planet of the Spiders)
