Guerner

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

The Guerners were a nomadic species. Because they consumed food resources faster than their meagre abilities as farmers could replenish them, the entire species abandoned its current home planet every few centuries to settle on another, as-yet-uninhabited world.

Biology[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Guerners were humanoids with tortoise-like shells on their back (whose distinctive patterns, unique for each individual, were the equivalent of fingerprints) and long noses. They had large feet, very flexible necks and eyes which twirled when they were happy or excited. The average Guerner stood about four feet six. The Guerners were herbivores, but with a ravenous appetite.

When they entered suspended animation, Guerners lose all their memories and personalities. Upon awakeneing, they would become entirely new people, whose tempers and tastes were adapted to their new environment. (PROSE: The Sleeping Beast)

Culture[[edit] | [edit source]]

When preparing for one of their mass exoduses, the nomadic Guerners traditionally consigned all their experiences in writing and buried the scrolls under their former house, in the hope that someday others coming to inhabit the planet they were abandoning might find them, and learn of what came before. This entrusting of testimony was also viewed as a way of thanking the planet which had sheltered them for a few centuries.

A traditional Guerner form of greeting among close friends was to blink seven times and extend one arm towards the other person. (PROSE: The Sleeping Beast)

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

At one point in their history, the Guerners settled on the planet Rimba. The Second Doctor arrived on Rimba a few weeks before the Guerners were slated to depart from it, befriending a young Guerner called Swee, who told him about the species' customs. The Doctor helped with the repairs on the ancient Guerner Transport Ships.

After journeying for 23000000 years, the ship landed on a new planet. However, its nuclear thrusters were mistaken by a dormant Kryptolian Sto-cat robot for its activation signal. The Sto-cat began attacking the ships just as the Guerners were awakening, leading their new personalities to be cold and warlike. The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith arrived and were able to explain its mistake to the Sto-cat, which willfully deactivated. Having realised the nature of the Guerners' amnesia, the Doctor then instructed them to return to suspended animation for a few days, erasing their memories once again and resetting them to their peaceful state.
