Guillotine
The guillotine was a device used in executions. It was frequently used by revolutionaries in 18th century France to dispose of their enemies.
As early as the reign of Louis XIV, the Paris city watch once threatened to send Julie d'Aubigny to the guillotine for illegally dueling a man who had offended her. (COMIC: Terror of the Cabinet Noir)
In 1789, a young French aristocrat named Jason (a.k.a. Marquis de Saint Epiman de Sinee de la Tour) was sentenced to death by guillotine but was rescued by the Sixth Doctor and became his companion. Later, the meddling of a Dalek caused the TARDIS to return to revolutionary France. Jason was arrested once more and his sentence was almost carried out but he managed to escape again. - In the real world, the guillotine was used from the French Revolution onwards as an execution method in France. It had not actually been invented yet in the time of Louis XIV, contrary to the state of things in the Doctor Who universe per Terror of the Cabinet Noir.
