speculation

Though there's little evidence, maybe very suble hints, (i.e. "The Lonely God", the Fourth Doctor's first choice of cloths, the suggestion that the Doctor's has a terible secret behind his name, fleeing the Time Lords because he grew bord of them, being someting of a trickster, River Song whispering two syllables to the Doctor, also the fact that the very first DW story was about fire...hmmm...) well I wonder, could it be possible that he is Loki, if so then what would be the implications??? 86.155.98.187 15:22, June 3, 2010 (UTC)

There are all kinds of connections to Norse mythology in the Seventh Doctor era. But that would break all kinds of continuity, including both the Lungbarrow and The Last of the Time Lords versions of his youth. Then again, maybe you could fit it into Lungbarrow--just as the Doctor is a reincarnation of the ancient Gallifreyan the Other, the Other was a reincarnation of the Old One, Loki. (I'm just assuming Loki, like Fenric and the Gods of Ragnarok, would turn out to be one of the Old Ones.) --Falcotron 15:37, June 3, 2010 (UTC)

Maybe the real question isn't who is the Doctor, but who will he become, (prehaps he's desined to end up becomming the "White Guardian, along with the Valard as the Black Guardian, somthing that can only be hinted at, but hows that for a plot twist,? I really want to write a 14 part Doctor Who story.86.154.177.150 23:47, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

Shades of Donna and the fortune teller: "What are you? What will you become?"
Anyway, Andrew Cartmel envisioned the Doctor as special in both ways--he was the reincarnation of The Other, and he was also destined to become the Champion of Time. (Even though She hadn't been born yet, once she was born she would be an Eternal and exist throughout time and space.) But of course both of those things were already used in the novels. PROSE: Lungbarrow, Love and War, in particular)
And of course he's destined to become the Valeyard, but again, that's already been dealt with. (TV: The Trial of a Time Lord and PROSE: Love and War again)
And he's also apparently destined to become Merlin, although that may only be true in a parallel universe. TV: Battlefield
As for him becoming one or two of the Guardians--why stop there; maybe he'll somehow retroactively create the Six-Fold-God. Or, in the non-canonical Time's Champion, it's hinted that he will later become the Champion of Life, and possibly the god that will succeed the Guardians if the special Eternals they created fail to do so, or something like that. --Falcotron 03:21, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to think it's something along the lines of 'Arnold' or 'Bernard'. I think Bernard suits him.

In The Girl in the Fireplace, when the Doctor reads Reinette's mind and she, to his considerable surprise, starts reading his mind, she says of his name, "It's more than just a secret." 89.241.66.26 13:54, May 27, 2011 (UTC)

There's a great interview somewhere with Sylvester McCoy where they talk about the Cartmel Masterplan, and he says something like, "They wanted to bring mystery back to the show. The Doctor is [spooky voice]not just another Time Lord[/spooky voice]. His identity is [spooky]more than just a secret[/spooky]. And all that sounds impressive. But then JNT said they were taking it too far, so they had to say, well, it's not that much more than a secret, just like a secret and 2p." --99.33.24.89 04:30, May 28, 2011 (UTC)
