Howling:Silly Speculation: Series Seven
Please DO NOT add to this discussion.
Now that we've begun to get hints about Series 7, any thoughts about what strange choices may pop up? I don't mean the return of the Rani -- it's a given that every female character will be thought to be the Rani. Here are a couple of my ideas:
- The preview posted on the BBC America site and currently on the Series 7 page in this wiki show a Wild West setting in America -- perhaps we will see Mark Sheppard return as Canton Everett Delaware I.
- I've suggested this elsewhere, but what do you hope to see in the new companion? I hypothesize that she will be the daughter of River Song and the Doctor. --- this will solve the problem of the Doctor's guilt about taking humans into danger. Boblipton talk to me 02:04, March 30, 2012 (UTC)

Well, the "young girl with the Doctor" has been part of the show's formula since the beginning, and is unlikely to change any time soon. Still, I agree that it is good to mix things up a bit. America's a big enough country that the Doctor isn't likely to run into another Canton Delaware, though it isn't impossible. If he's going to the old west though, then maybe we'll finally get a reprise of The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon, which all Doctor Who fans have been waiting for for 46 years. Well, that would be kind of stupid, but hopefully there will be some kind of nod to the Gunfighters. That eyestalk at the end of the trailer looked like it could have been a Dalek eyestalk, and we haven't had any good Dalek episodes during the Moffat era. The new companion being the Doctor and River's daughter would be pretty cool, though there isn't any real reason to believe that that's the case. Besides, if a daughter of the Doctor's is going to be a character, then it would be nice to learn what hapenned to Jenny before the Doctor gets another daughter. I'm sure we'll also see more of the Silence in season 7, and possibly see the Fall of the Eleventh at the Fields of Trenzalore.Icecreamdif talk to me 01:30, March 31, 2012 (UTC)

ok, i know this probably isn't true, and is on par with assuming the new companion is the rani, but could she be a regenerated form of jenny? well, anyway, the official dw website said it wasn't going to be a typical boy meets girl story, even for doctor who. any suggestions on what people think is meant by that? Well, if he says that it's not a typical boy meets girl story, that probably means that it is an atypical boy meets girl story, and if it is a boy meets girl story, that probably rules out the new companion being his daughter. Hopefully, she will be something a bit more interesting than a human from 21st century Earth though. I doubt that they would recast Jenny if they were to bring her back, unless the original actress really didn't want to come back. I agree that the young girl being the only companion with the Doctor gets kind of boring, but it's what the 3rd(arguably), 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, and 10th Doctors generally did, so don't expect that pattern to go away anytime soon.Icecreamdif talk to me 07:16, March 31, 2012 (UTC)
Moffat has said the Doctor will meet the new companion in "the last place he'd ever expect". If he meant that literally (which he almost certainly doesn't), that would suggest Gallifrey.
On the "young girl alone with the Doctor" point: It depends. Rose was a "young girl alone with the Doctor" but so was Ace and the two relationships were very, very different. --89.241.78.21talk to me 02:29, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
Galliifrey may be the last place that the Doctor would expect, but it's hardly the last place that fans would expect. Literally speaking, the last place that fans would expect would be some place ridiculously obscure, or a location that isn't actually from Doctor Who. It would indeed be good to have an alien companion again.

She might be. I don't think there's been an alien companion since Turlough. What would be really cool, would be if the Doctor had an alien companion, and he took her on trips to different points in her planet's history, and occassionally brought her back home to visit her family like he would do with a human companion. It always seemed a bit unlikely that he visited very few planets more than once, but visited Earth all the time even when he couldn't control his TARDIS.Icecreamdif talk to me 20:24, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
The fact that he visited Earth a lot when he couldn't control his TARDIS indicates that his TARDIS wished to take him to Earth a lot. She has said she "took him where he needed to go", which means as she defined it. She felt he needed to go to Earth, which means he needed to go there -- by her standards. Later, he was exiled to earth and the Time Lords installed some sort of function which made him a "cosmic yo-yo", heading back to Earth willy-nilly. Subsequently, she has still occasionally taken him places, but has been a little vague about exact position, particularly in time The Doctor's Daughter and orientation Fear Her. Clearly, we are dealing with the sense of "where the Doctor needs to be" from a creature which exists simultaneously in all of space and time, but can't communicate particularly clearly in terms of human speech. Should we be surprised if it occasionally chooses places and times that make little sense to us? I have enough trouble figuring out what people think, let alone cats, and they're pretty close relatives who live in similar environments. Well, the Third Doctor obviously has a very good excuse for spending so much time on Earth, and the later ones could control the TARDIS(except when the Fourth Doctor was using the randomiser), but there isn't really any good reason that the TARDIS would feel that the Doctor needs to go to Earth any more than any other planet. I guess the TARDIS might sense that he has a human mother and feels that he needs to visit his ancestors homeworld, but it would be cool to see a few other major recurring planets than just Earth, Gallifrey, and Skaro. We've seen dozens of different periods in Earth history, but we usually only see other worlds once. If he had an alien companion, then he could take her to visit all the most interesting places in her planet's history.Icecreamdif talk to me 23:30, April 1, 2012 (UTC)
It's clear that Earth gets more than its "fair share" of visits. That's probably because in the history of the universe, humans are a very important species. Still, it should be remembered that we see a sample of adventures, ones that the people in charge of the franchise think we'd be interested in seeing. That means humans on Earth a lot.
