Gordon James Lethbridge-Stewart was the son of Gordon Conall Lethbridge-Stewart and Mary Gore and elder brother of Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. He was born April 2 1926 and named after his maternal grandfather, James Gore.

He was the nominal leader of the Bledoe Cadets, a gang of similar aged kids in Bledoe, which consisted of Henry Barns, Raymond Phillips, Jemima Flemming and others. Jemima was only allowed in because Henry fancied her, although she only had eyes for James. He constantly refused Alistair entry, on account of him not being old enough - you had to be ten and over. He often teased his brother, and at one point even threatened to drag him to the Pengriffen fogou for sneaking into the Cadets' gang hut. (PROSE: The Bledoe Cadets and the Bald Man of Pengriffen)

At the beginning of the school year of 1937, James, with Raymond and Alistair, encountered what would become known as the Hallow Man in Draynes Wood. The Man touched him, and he was never the same after. For months he had an imaginary friend, called Maha (really the Great Intelligence), a being who forced him to kill himself on Sunday 27 March, a week before his twelfth birthday in 1938. When they left Bledoe in 1945, both Mary's and Alistair's memories of James were removed by the Great Intelligence. Although it deliberately left a sense of absence in Mary as further punishment against Alistair. Years later, in 1969, it was revealed by the ghost "Gordon" that James carried an immortal soul that would one day be reincarnated into a man called Mahasamatman, who would go on to ascend into the being that became the Great Intelligence. James' soul was reincarnated in 1951 as Owain Vine. (PROSE: The Forgotten Son)
