In 1289, the First Doctor, Ian Chesterton, Barbara Wright and Susan Foreman met Kublai Khan. During this adventure, Marco Polo tried to claim the Doctor's TARDIS for the Khan. In Peking, the Doctor lost the TARDIS to Kublai Khan in a game of backgammon, a game the Khan's wife claimed aggravated his gout. When asked if Kublai Khan would be angry if the caravan were to be delayed, Marco Polo responded by saying "of course he will". His two great passions were hunting and falconry and his stables were said to house ten thousand white stallions. He also enjoyed gambling, but the Empress did not approve. He became quick friends with the First Doctor due to their shared old age and related afflictions. The Khan was displeased with Marco when he learnt that his reasons for taking the TARDIS were unjust and selfish, but he ultimately forgave him.
