The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra was an orchestra in Germany. Hans Engel wanted to play cello for the orchestra under Bruno Walter, but when Mr Walter fled to Austria to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews, Hans served under Abendroth, who Hans called a "fine leader".
