The woman who served as the host of the Gestalt before Kady Williams was trying to save a little girl when she was mortally wounded. Happening upon Kady, then an ordinary human woman, she made her promise to save the girl. When Kady accepted, she unwittingly agreed to become the new host for the Gestalt, which passed from her to Kady. (PROSE: Ring Theory)
