The grandfather of Mary Minett built a summer retreat home on the outskirts of Hawkswick village in North Yorkshire in the year 1863. He had a son who was born in the family's summer retreat in the room that would later serve as his granddaughter Mary's bedroom. Mary's grandfather was among four generations of Minett family members whose picture she kept on the mantelpiece in the summer retreat in 1918.
