The character Joseph Serf in The Man Who Never Was was named in reference to the pseudonym used by Patrick, when directing episodes of The Prisoner, to conceal the fact that he was involved in a greater capacity on certain episodes than would be expected of him. Thus, "Joseph Serf" was a man who never was, created to conceal the true organisation behind the scenes.
