Sam Russell was a spaceship officer in the 22nd century. In 2152, he was serving aboard the ship that took the Project Eden crew to the Lucifer system. He fell in love with Cheryl, and the captain married them on the journey. Sam joined the project as an engineer.
In 2157, while the Seventh Doctor, Bernice Summerfield, and Ace were visiting the system, Sam found out that Cheryl had been having an affair with Paula Engado. While he was taking off his starsuit after a walk on Belial's surface, Piper O'Rourke's virus caused it to break his neck. She shoved his body in a locker to cover up what she had done.
