Samael Avner
Samael Avner, also known as Sam, was Vira's partner before she was selected for the Nerva Beacon.

Sam was born with Lucarotti's Syndrome and had to regularly take a mild steroid through an inhaler. He worked alongside Noah and Vira and entered into a relationship with the latter, but his condition meant that he was not chosen to survive the solar flares in the World Executive secret project and he was dismissed from his role. He suspected that Noah requested his dismissal and would come to believe that he was responsible for Vira's supposed death in an accident.
Sam went in search of Erno Balthazar to investigate the project and located him on the Lotophage Platform where he adopted the name of Sam Spendlove. He teamed up with River Song, learnt of the Nerva Beacon and travelled to the Republic of Hy-Brasil where he attempted to kill Noah before learning that Vira was still alive. The pair stopped Dastur Tausend's attempt to sabotage the exodus, but Sam was shot and River uploaded him and billions of other humans to the Library to save them.
