Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

When Skorpios and the Cosmegalon Corporation intended to destroy the Earth, Smilax brought them to court due to a preservation order, and called on the Doctor to act as a star witness to vouch for the existence of intelligent life on Earth. However, Smilax neglected to tell the Doctor that Earth at that time was protected under galactic law and admitting to having been there was a crime punishable by vaporisation. When Romana questioned him on this, he initially denied knowledge, before admitting he knew but assumed that as the Doctor was in possession of the TARDIS, he would be able to escape unharmed; however, the Doctor's TARDIS had been arrested for materialising in court mid-session.

Romana later discovered that Smilax's true interest in rescuing Earth was to turn it into a habitat for Hobkinson's Greater White-Crested Spergasaurians, a species he believed to be endangered. At the conclusion of the court case, the Doctor imparted to him that Hobkinson's Greater White-Crested Spergasaurians were in fact notorious parasites known for preying on the goodwill of others by pretending to be endangered, in order to become settled on a planet before telepathically calling the rest of their species in hibernation and, in the Doctor's words, "strip[ping] it bare in weeks". Enraged by the knowledge of this ruse, Smilax stormed off, vowing to return to his former job of big game hunting to eradicate the Spergasaurians. (AUDIO: The Doomsday Contract)
