:Oh. That's probably a "flashlight" effect that might have had something to do with either just the bulb being used in the prop, or to visibly show newcomers to the series in its revived era unfamiliar with Doctors 3&4 (the main sonic users) that the sonic screwdriver was actually doing something as opposed to people thinking that the Doctor was just pointing a metal stick at something and waiting.
