Was this particular idiom actually in use as early as 1943? I'm aware that it first sprung from the CBS radio show <i>Take it or Leave It</i>, which was on the air during World War II. But at that point the prize money on offer was only $64. It wasn't until the show moved from radio to television in June 1955 that the prize money was raised to $64,000.  I suppose the rigger could have been exaggerating for emphasis, but that seems a tad contrived to me.
