Magic Afro: Your point 3: Many characters (including the Doctor, whose sonic screwdriver does this) have devices with such scanning abilities. It's such a useful thing to be able to do that almost any society with (a) a sufficient level of technology & (b) contact with alien species (i.e., alien to them) would develop devices to do it. Think how many sf stories/series have something extremely like a tricorder!
